I strongly support adding a managed target shooting range to the PML
amenities.  I've seen fires that have started from managed and unmanaged
gun ranges before, but they were all caused by people using illegal
ammunition or shooting at unsafe metal targets without proper brush and
grass clearance.  As for the noise, the sound of firearms, particularly
shotguns carries a long way and I doubt that the location of the shooting
range will be conducive to zero tolerance noise levels.  Limiting days and
time of days for shooting activities will be essential. Even though the
Stanislaus National Forest doesn't have "designated" shooting areas, they
do allow safe target shooting in many areas and have had little problem
with resulting fires, but tree damage and trash left behind are constant
concerns.  The few problems they've experienced would not be problems for
us with a managed shooting range at PML.  This proposed activity would only
work with a core interest group leading the way, much as the tennis group
has helped PML provide adequate tennis facilities.  Managed target shooting
ranges have worked well in other areas and we need to pattern our range
after those successful operations. Responsible firearm ownership is on the
rise within the state and nationally and PML should quickly address
property owners needs in this area as they would with other increasing
recreational needs such as wireless computer access, extended hiking and
biking trails and developing safe walkways adjacent to roadways.
